Isidore's gruff boss. Driven by work. Skeptical, sarcastic. His rare softness emerges when around children.
FATHER MARTINEZ. Sympathetic and wise parish priest. Gives counsel to all in times of struggle.
THE MILLER. Hard-working laborer who does not suffer fools or beggars. Can be "all business."
Isidore and Maria's young son. Impish little boy who adores his father. Precocious, inquisitive. Simple and pure faith.
Wealthy landowner. Stern but fair. Good to his employees. Open-minded supporter of the miracles associated with Isidore.
Isidore's wife. Longs for a child. Loves and supports her husband. Happy to take her place in the home but unafraid to voice her doubts and fears.
PABLO. 25-35. Isidore's simple-minded, loyal friend. Sometimes the comic relief on the farm. Has a childlike innocence.
THE BEGGAR. 25-35. A humble man who seeks food and shelter from the cold.
SENORA DE VARGAS. Late 40s. Mistress of the estate. Señor De Vargas's wife. Born wealthy. Looks down on the farmhands. Distraught mother.
NURSE. 30s. A nurse available in times of birth and death.
