BISHOP DIEGO. 34-37. Spanish dialect. Patient and composed young leader. Exudes calm authority and steady wisdom. He's like an older brother to his close friend, Dominic.
SIMON de MONTFORT. 34-39. French dialect. A French nobleman and commander of the king's army. Loyal to the Church, he leads an army in battle against the Albigenses. Noble warrior. Dignified. A real hero.
An Albigensian bishop. Smooth-tongued, gifted at preaching, magnetic personality. A hypocrite. He uses the beliefs and practices of Albigensianism to maintain his own power. We have to see and understand why people are drawn to him.
BROTHER GUIDO. 40s. Italian dialect. A Cistercian brother. Lazy and debauched. Fond of drink and women. He's part of the problem and a perfect example of the kind decadence the Albigenses reject.
BISHOP RENAUD. 60s. French dialect. Bishop of Beziers. Distressed by the loss of so many of his innocent congregation.
A French nobleman who actively supports the Albigenses. Wants to gain political support and power. Calculated. Arrogant. Self-preserving.
Trusted secretary and assistant to Pope Innocent. A loyal, humble priest willing to step up and play whatever role he can. Consummate diplomat and statesman. Fair-minded.
JUANA. 20s. Spanish dialect. Dominic's mother. Heard in flashbacks.
MATHILDE. 20s. French dialect. Young French woman sent to Dominic & Diego as a spy. She ends up falling in love with the life Dominic shares with her and joining his order.
Duke Raymond's chief attendant. Loyal, but mostly out of fear.
POPE INNOCENT. Italian dialect. Leader of the Church. A man of great humility and calmness, especially in the face of adversity. A noble soul who's willing to bear the weight of papal responsibility in a dark time, even if it comes at a cost.
CONGREGATION. French dialect. Both an Albigensian congregation & the congregation at Dominic's convent in Fanjeaux.
