Kateri Tekakwitha

The Merry Beggars presents the story of the first Native American to be named a Christian saint. Kateri Tekakwitha, an honorable and virtuous member of the Mohawk tribe, leaves everything behind to pursue a deeper calling.

We are seeking nonunion actors to join us as we tell the story of Kateri Tekakwitha, Lily of the Mohawks.

St. Kateri Tekakwitha, Lily of the Mohawks, was the daughter of an Algonquin, who was captured by the Mohawks and took a Mohawk chief for her husband. Kateri lost her parents to smallpox at a young age, and so was raised by her uncle, chief of a Mohawk clan.

Kateri had no desire for marriage and refused to entertain any proposals, much against the wishes of her adoptive parents. At the age of nineteen, Kateri converted to Catholicism. Her decision was very unpopular among the tribe. To avoid persecution, she traveled to a Christian native community south of Montreal.
