Overview
A young Belgian priest abandons comfort and safety, becoming a missionary halfway around the world. He encounters a people suffering from a mysterious, deadly disease. How can he help them? How can he bring the face of Christ to the Island of the Living Dead?
This is the story of Damien of Molokai. An original audio drama series from the Merry Beggars.
Rehearsals
Rehearsals for Damien of Molokai will take place on Monday, October 9, 1:30-4:30 PM CT and Monday, October 16, 12:30-2:00 PM CT. Rehearsals are conducted via Zoom.
Recording
The recording session for Damien of Molokai will be on Wednesday October 25, 8:30 AM-5:30 PM CT, in person at our studio in Lincolnshire, IL.
Payment
$20/hour for rehearsals, up to $250 for leading roles.
Instructions
Decide! Determine which show you will be auditioning for by choosing from the list on our audition page. Then, look through the character breakdowns and choose which character you'd like to audition for. You can audition for multiple roles.
Sides! Within the dropdown for each character description, you'll find downloadable PDFs of the audition sides for that character. Download the sides. Review the sides until you are familiar with them and comfortable performing them.
Hide! Next, set up your space. Find a quiet space and prepare to record your audition using whatever recording software is available to you. This can be done on your phone if access to a studio or home-recording equipment is limited. Please record only your own lines, not those of the other characters in the scene(s).
If recording your audition as a video, ensure you are in a quiet environment with a neutral background. There should be no distractions. If recording your audition as
audio, you will not be judged by the quality of your audio, as we will record everything in studio. Actors can NOT edit their audition tapes or add special effects, music, or other audio.
Please slate prior to each side: "Name, Character, Side #". Each character should be recorded separately and uploaded as its own mp3 file. We would prefer not to hear a reader reading with you. Please label your files CHARACTER NAME-Your Name-Side#s.
Mp3 audio recordings preferred. Video audition allowed if necessary.

Roles
Young Belgian priest and missionary. Sent to live among the people suffering from leposy in Hawaii. Strong, determined, stubborn, kind.
CATO. Flemish dialect. Damien's mother. A pious woman who loves her children.
AILANA. Hawaiian dialect. Damien's cook and mother of Kaiko, sister of Hilo. Kind, concerned and loving mother.
Please read both Side One and Side Two.
Damien's friend and fellow seminarian. Accompanies him to Hawaii.
Damien's father. Wants him to remain on the farm. Strong & determined like his son.
Brother of Damien's cook, Ailana. Volunteers to help build the church, Hides his wife, when she contracts leprosy. Sent to Molokai and is reunited with his family when he contracts it himself.
Jacques: Damien's godfather. Finds Damien when he is lost. Jovial.
William Williamson: British male nurse who cares for the lepers on Molokai. He contracts leprosy. Helps Damien learn how to care for the lepers.
He and Damien become friends. Sent to Molokai when he contracts leprosy. Dies in Damien's arms.
Damien's older brother. A good student.
