France’s remote Occitan region, 1858: A fourteen year old peasant girl struggles in poverty and isolation. When a mysterious Lady appears to her with a startling message, she is persecuted for what she knows to be true. This is the story of Bernadette.
An original audio drama series produced by The Merry Beggars.
Rehearsals
Rehearsals for Bernadette of Lourdes will take place on Tuesday, October 10, 1:00-4:00 PM CT; and Monday, October 16, 2:30-4:00 PM CT. Rehearsals are remote, over Zoom.
Recording
The recording session for Bernadette of Lourdes will be on Thursday, October 26, 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM CT, in person at our studio in Lincolnshire, IL.
Payment
$20/hr for rehearsals and dialect coaching; up to $225 for leading and supporting roles.
Instructions
Decide! Determine which show you will be auditioning for by choosing from the list on our audition page. Then, look through the character breakdowns and choose which character you'd like to audition for. You can audition for multiple roles.
Sides! Within the dropdown for each character description, you'll find downloadable PDFs of the audition sides for that character. Download the sides. Review the sides until you are familiar with them and comfortable performing them.
Hide! Next, set up your space. Find a quiet space and prepare to record your audition using whatever recording software is available to you. This can be done on your phone if access to a studio or home-recording equipment is limited. Please record only your own lines, not those of the other characters in the scene(s).
Please record your audition as an mp3 audio file. Actors should NOT edit their audition tapes or add special effects, music, or other audio.
Please slate prior to each side "Your Name, Character Name, Side #". Each character should be recorded separately and uploaded as its own mp3 file. Please only record your own character's lines, and do not use a reader.
Audio recordings preferred, video audition allowed if necessary.

Roles
A humble peasant girl, familiar with physical labor and hardship. Eldest child in her impoverished family. Resilient. Naturally meek, but determined when she sets her mind on something.
Bernadette's aunt. A straightforward woman who remains loyal to her niece.
The parish priest in Lourdes. An overworked man. He's skeptical of Bernadette's story at first.
Bernadette's father. Recently out of prison; chronically unemployed.
Head of the police in Lourdes. Determined to maintain order and control.
Bernadette's younger brother. Clumsy.
Mary, Our Lady of Lourdes. Youthful, radiant, gentle, but firm.
Bernadette's mother. Years of poverty and privation have sharpened her. She's raising five children in the basement of an abandoned jail. Supports the family as a laundress.
Simple country woman who takes in Bernadette to help with farm work. Tough, practical.
Bernadette's younger sister. Blunt. Speaks her mind.
